Binary black hole mergers from population III stars: Uncertainties from star formation and binary star properties

چکیده

Abstract Population III (Pop. III) binary stars likely produced the first stellar-born black hole (BBH) mergers in Universe. Here, we quantify main sources of uncertainty for merger rate density evolution and mass spectrum Pop. BBHs by considering four different formation histories 11 models initial orbital properties stars. The on affects BBH up to two orders magnitude, with shorter periods leading higher rates. star history has a substantial impact both shape normalisation density: peak shifts from z ∼ 8 16 depending assumed rate, while maximum our fiducial population model spans ∼2 ∼30 Gpc−3 yr−1. typical masses are not affected only mildly influenced parameters. primary holes born tend be rather massive (30 − 40 M⊙) respect those metal-rich (8 10 M⊙). We estimate that Einstein Telescope will detect 104 per year, properties.

Gravitational Waves from Binary Black Hole Mergers inside Stars.

We present results from a controlled numerical experiment investigating the effect of stellar density gas on the coalescence of binary black holes (BBHs) and the resulting gravitational waves (GWs). This investigation is motivated by the proposed stellar core fragmentation scenario for BBH formation and the associated possibility of an electromagnetic counterpart to a BBH GW event. We employ fu...

Binary Neutron Star Mergers

We review the current status of studies of the coalescence of binary neutron star systems. We begin with a discussion of the formation channels of merging binaries and we discuss the most recent theoretical predictions for merger rates. Next, we turn to the quasi-equilibrium formalisms that are used to study binaries prior to the merger phase and to generate initial data for fully dynamical sim...

Black hole binary mergers

I overview the current understanding of the evolution of massive black hole (MBH) binaries in the center of the host stellar system. One of the main questions is whether the stellar dynamical effect can make the MBH binary hard enough that they can merge through gravitational wave radiation. So far, theories and numerical simulations suggested otherwize, since the hardening timescale becomes ve...

Binary black hole mergers

www.physicstoday.org After decades of effort, numerical relativists can now simulate the inspiral and merger of two black holes orbiting each other. That computational triumph has come none too soon—physicists are on the verge of detecting gravitational waves for the first time, and at long last they know what to look for. Black holes are strong-field objects whose properties are governed by Ei...

Neutron-Star Radius from a Population of Binary Neutron Star Mergers.

We show how gravitational-wave observations with advanced detectors of tens to several tens of neutron-star binaries can measure the neutron-star radius with an accuracy of several to a few percent, for mass and spatial distributions that are realistic, and with none of the sources located within 100 Mpc. We achieve such an accuracy by combining measurements of the total mass from the inspiral ...
